Introduction to The Complete John Wayne Discography

Picture
In The Complete John Wayne Discography, you will find four "sections":

1. Soundtracks / Scores / Singles: These can be actual "from the film" recordings of the "actual" film itself, or, a re-recording of the original motion picture soundtrack or score, or, an artist that was completely independent from the film, but who may have recorded a specific song from the film. This section will also contain singles such as 45's or 78's that contain two - four selections from the film soundtrack - including songs that were recorded for the film, but not used in the film. A quick note on the use of the terms "soundtrack" and "score." Technically, a "soundtrack" is just that, the "track" of "sound" that was actually used in the film itself. It is not a re-recording of the musical selections used in the film. A "score" is the musical composition used during the making of the film. When a musical soundtrack is re-recorded, it is technically the "original motion picture score." However, these are not hard and fast definitions, and the two terms have almost become synonymous. Therefore, for the purposes of the Complete John Wayne Discography, the two terms "soundtrack" and "score" will be used interchangeably.

2. Compilations: Compilations are just that. A varied selection of different musical pieces from more than one film. Over the decades, there have been dozens and dozens of compilation albums, from several different countries, that contain one or more pieces of music from a John Wayne film. Because of this single fact, I have not included every single compilation album in this discography, and I have made the decision to limit the inclusion of compilation albums to those that either contain musical selections that are not available on full soundtrack albums, or have significantly different arrangements of those selections.

3. Tributes: These are recordings made by others in tribute to John Wayne after his death.

4. Interviews: These are recorded interviews given by John Wayne during his lifetime, as well as interviews given by others who are making reference to or speaking specifically about John Wayne - again, during his lifetime, and not considered to be a posthumous tribute.

The Complete John Wayne Discography does not contain audio recordings of programs, PSA's, commercials, etc., that were originally broadcast on the radio. These all appear on the Complete List of John Wayne Radio Appearances, and can be found there.

All titles contained in The Complete John Wayne Discography are listed in alphabetical order, and can be accessed by clicking on the appropriate link in the right hand side bar.

Also located on the right hand side bar of this page, is a downloadable .PDF file of The Complete John Wayne Discography. Due to size constraints, I have not included images of the different entries in the .PDF file as I have here on this page.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the inclusion or exclusion of any title, or if you find any errors, or would like to let me know of any title I may have missed, please let me know. I can be contacted via the "Contact" tab on the navigation bar at the top of this (or any) page.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance / Donovan's Reef
Label: Kritzerland
Cat.#: 20028-4
Country: United States
Format: CD
Release Date: 2014
UPN: 857252002845

Notes:
From Kritzerland: Cyril J. Mockridge provided the score to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and a great score it is, filled with original themes as well as some source music that’s beautifully arranged into the fabric of the score. Ford asked for a nod to Alfred Newman’s “Ann Rutledge Theme” from Young Mr. Lincoln, because he felt it evoked lost love. It’s a short score, but one cannot imagine the film without it.

The following year, Ford was back with his new film, Donovan’s Reef, reuniting John Wayne with Lee Marvin. The movie is a colorful lark, but one with some serious undertones such as racial bigotry, conniving corporations and greed.

Once again, Ford used Cyril J. Mockridge for the film’s musical score. Mockridge mostly uses traditional Hawaiian music for his themes, but it all works perfectly in the film, giving it an authentic Hawaiian flavor and keeping the frolicsome nature of the film moving right along. There are also some very lovely themes as the score goes along, and it’s just a delightful pastiche for a delightful pastiche of a film.

Limited to 1,000 copies only.

The Conqueror
Music by Victor Young and lyrics by Edward Heyman
Sung by Frank Verna with the Jack Pleis Orchestra

Label: Decca
Cat.#: Decca 9-29855
Country: United States
Format: 7” 45rpm Vinyl
Release Date: 1956
UPN: None

Notes:
Although one might not think of a film like The Conqueror could be the basis for a popular song, but the fact is, it was. Lee Hatsfeld, who has a wonderful blog called “Music You (Possibly) Won’t Hear Anyplace Else,” has the Decca 45 in his collection and reports that the song is “based on a theme from” the Conqueror, and the music is played just after the opening credits of the film. [http://musicyouwont.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-conqueror-frank-verna-w-jack-pleis.html ]

Also released on the Festival Records label (FS78-912) in July 1956 and the Brunswick label (45-05548), also in 1956, with all three 45’s featuring the same two songs. These records are fairly rare, although the Decca and the Brunswick label records do appear for sale online from time to time.

Side A: The Conqueror
Side B: Midnight in Paris

Records and Paramount Pictures present the CD premiere of legendary composer Elmer Bernstein's (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, TRUE GRIT, AIRPLANE, GHOSTBUSTERS) original scores to Paramount Pictures' acclaimed westerns starring John Wayne, THE SHOOTIST (1976) and THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER (1965). Bernstein's original score tracks for THE SHOOTIST make their world premiere on this release, mastered from stereo mixes. This release also marks the CD premiere of Bernstein's re-recording and arrangement of his THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER score for the original Columbia Records soundtrack CD, which presents adaptations of his film cues, sometimes combining two or more of them in single tracks, while other selections begin with music from the film, but continue as extended arrangements of specific melodies. Included is the title song performed by Johnny Cash, as well as the John Wayne narration. Also featured is a rare version of the title song performed by Ernie Sheldon and released as a single when the film opened. While the KATIE ELDER original film score tracks have not survived, the original LP has been remastered from the master tapes in the Sony Music vaults. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and Lukas Kendall and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this release includes exclusive, in-depth liners from film music writer Jeff Bond and is limited to 2000 units. Talking With John Wayne

Label: Readers Digest Audio Services
Cat.#: N/A
Country: United States
Format: February 1972
Release Date: 33rpm “Flexi-Disc”
UPN: None

Notes:
Hosted by Ronny Graham, this February 1972 interview with John Wayne is on a 7 ¾”, 33rpm, dual sided “flexi-disc.” It is a “Reader’s Digest Educational Edition,” which was mailed out to schools in an effort to keep high school level students up to speed with the current popular culture.

Track Listing:
Side One: The Making of The Godfather, Host Ronny Grant narrates this feature analyzing some serious social aspects of the Francis Ford Coppola film adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel. Star James Caan (Sonny Corleone) is interviewed by telephone, as are Nat Marcone of the Italian American Civil Rights League and Al Ruddy, producer of the film.

Side Two: Talking with John Wayne, Ronny Grant interviews Hollywood immortal "Duke" Wayne on the set of his newest film, The Cowboys. The interview opens with a brief musical excerpt of Glen Campbell singing the theme from Wayne's earlier True Grit, and a section of dialog from that film between Wayne and co-star Kim Darby is played within the interview. Graham asks Wayne to weigh in on many topics: kids (in general and his own), student protests, the teen drug problem, violence in the movies (illusion vs. realism), and the interpretation of "liberalism" by the media. Wayne also responds to his recent naming in a Reader's Digest poll as one of the four most admired men in America.
