Notes:
One of the very first Quiet Man albums to be released was the 10” LP from Decca (DL-5411) – Themes and Songs from The Quiet Man, featuring Bing Crosby, and the films composer Victor Young and his orchestra. (The other was “Song’s from John Ford’s The Quiet Man” by Merv Griffin – see below).
The film that Republic Studio head Herb Yates called a “silly little Irish story” that was “too green” and “would never make any money” has become a perennial favorite for generations the world over. The chemistry between stars John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara was never stronger, never more pronounced in any of their five films together as it was in The Quiet Man. Add in the bonus of great character actors such as Ward Bond, Mildred Natwick, Barry Fitzgerald (and his brother Arthur Shields) and the wonderful Victor McLaglen – as well as pre-eminent director John Ford and Maurice Walsh’s timeless story – and you have a film destined to become a well-loved classic. Which is exactly what The Quiet Man has become.
When it came time to score the film, John Ford turned to his friend, Hollywood composer Victor Young. For The Quiet Man, Young sprinkled the soundtrack with many Irish airs such as “The Rakes of Mallow” and “The Wild Colonial Boy.” One piece, personally chosen by Ford himself, is the most prominent – the melody “Isle of Innisfree.” This piece was not written by Young, but by the Irish policeman/songwriter Richard Farrelly, who wrote it on a bus jouney from County Meath to Dublin. The melody which is first heard over the opening credit sequencewith Ashford Castle in the backgroundbecomes the principal musical theme of The Quiet Man, and is reprised at least eleven times throughout the film.
The upbeat melody comedically hummed by Michaeleen Og Flynn, and later played on the accordian, is “The Rakes of Mallow.”

Of special note are the inclusion of two of the films songs, “The Humour is on Me Now” and “Mush Mush Mush Tural I Addy,” which for some reason have never been included on any of the other issues of The Quiet Man soundtrack. Both are wonderful songs worthy of inclusion, and one has to wonder why they only made it onto this particular album.
