This is one of those scores that put Williams "on the map" before he became a hot commodity with Jaws. It's not hard to see why. This is a fun-filled, rousing score filled with delightful Copland-esque Americana.

The first mention was found on Amazon.com, where a person posted that he/she owned both the RC31 Promo LP (mentioned below) and the Varese Sarabande CD (also mentioned below), both of which run approximately 30 minutes. This person also stated that he/she owned a “27-track collector’s copy” that runs just over 60 minutes. According to this person’s post, the “collector’s copy” contains the 17 tracks found on the Varese Sarabande CD as well as an additional 10 tracks of music from the film. These additional 10 tracks are:
High Spirits 2:05
Death Riders 2:02
The Takeover 1:58
Entre'acte 2:34
Coward :56
A Coward's Deed 1:55
The Trap 8:26
End of the Drive/End Titles 1:30
Exit Music 1:20
Concert Suite 9:00
The second mention was in a Wikipedia article of the discography of John Williams. This discography includes the 1973 Promo LP and also a 1994 Varese Sarabande CD that is said to include previously unreleased material. Interestingly, this CD is listed as a “compilation” album. Could this be a reference to the alleged “collector’s copy”? The Varese Sarabande CD released in 1995 does not mention any “previously unreleased material” included on the CD. So it is possible that there is a very limited collector’s edition out there somewhere. Of course it is also possible that the elusive collector’s edition is nothing more than an unofficially released bootleg.

Notes:
From Amazon: In a career that's spanned five decades, composer John Williams has scored fewer than five Westerns, which--judging from his exemplary work on this 1972 score for director Mark Rydell's story of a tough veteran cowpoke (John Wayne) helping to bring a group of inexperienced young hands to manhood on a cattle drive--seems something of a shame. Williams offers up a robust, brassy score that leans heavily on the same prime Aaron Copland influences that informed Elmer Bernstein's Magnificent Seven and Jerome Moross's The Big Country. This fine Varese Sarabande release, notable for the presence and clarity of its recording, also features an unused alternate main title and other previously unreleased music from the film. --Jerry McCulley
