Notes: How the West Was Won is a multi-part epic in several different senses. There are, to begin with, those three overlapping Cinerama images that splash it across a wraparound movie screen. There are four distinct story lines that were handled by three directors, making up a running time of more than two and a half hours. And even the soundtrack album contains multiple elements. First, of course, there is Alfred Newman's orchestral score, paced by the big, heroic Western title theme that gets used in a variety of different moods throughout. To that can be added a collection of traditional and newly written folk tunes, which are performed by the Ken Darby Singers in a manner that suggests the Sing Along with Mitch albums as well as by former Kingston Trio leader Dave Guard & the Whiskeyhill Quartet, which ties into the folk music revival of the early '60s. Finally, there is Debbie Reynolds, whose starring role traverses the entire lengthy narrative, and who gets an opportunity to sing several traditional songs, including "Home in the Meadow," "Raise a Ruckus," and "What Was Your Name in the States?," with newly written lyrics by Sammy Cahn and Johnny Mercer, just as if the film were a frothy MGM musical with a Western setting, which it is, among, as can be seen, many other things. After SBK Records acquired rights to the MGM soundtrack, the label entered into an agreement with the Special Products division of Sony Music, resulting in this expanded version of the album released in 1991. An extra 13 and a half minutes are highlighted by excerpts from Spencer Tracy's voice-over narration, a brief performance of "Erie Canal" by Dave Guard & the Whiskeyhill Singers, and the exit music, which repeats much of what has gone before. Bruce Eder provides comprehensive liner notes. - by William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

2-CD set.
Includes score (including several extended versions), source music, outtakes, demo. The meat of this 2 CD set is the score itself, which is fabulous. The accompanying brochure, which describes the history of the movie, the music, the composers (Alfred Newman with assistance from several prominent lyrists and arrangers), is also very informative.
