Hello, I just happened to find your web site, which is fantastic by the way......because I was looking for John Wayne's Brand. I know there are belt buckles with the Red River Brand on them that state that was John Waynes' brand. But upon more research i found the 26 Bar Ranch. Which one is correct or did he have both registered in his name with the Brand Inspector through the State of Arizona?
Hi Annette, first off, let me say thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoy the site! In answer to your question, John Wayne owned two ranches in Arizona that I know of. The 26 Bar Ranch and the Red River Land and Cattle Company. He raised Herefords on the 26 bar, and the Red River Land and Cattle Company raised cotton, and also had a huge feed lot which handled the 26 Bar cattle. I do not believe the Red River Land and Cattle Co. had a brand, nor have I been able to locate any brand for them. The Red River brand that appeared on his belt buckle (which is still available for sale through many companies) is the brand used by his character Tom Dunson in the 1948 film, “Red River.”
The 26 Bar brand was used by John Wayne and Louis Johnson on their 26 Bar ranch. Belt buckles were made featuring the 26 Bar brand, but from what I have been able to find, they were not made for sale to the public, and are fairly rare. Currently, the 26 Bar brand is owned by the Hopi Indian Tribe, which also owns the 26 Bar ranch, and the brand is registered through October 15, 2016. This is according to the 2013 Arizona Brand Book, which can be downloaded for free at: http://www.azda.gov/Docs/BrandsBook2013.pdf
Again, thank you for liking the site, and I hope I have answered your question. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
