Rio Bravo
Author: Leigh Brackett
A novelization / Tie-in for the film of the same name.
Publisher: Bantam Books
Publication Date: 1959
Notes:
Paperback. 154 pages
Although B.H. McCampbell is credited with writing the original short story, this simply isn’t true. B.H. McCampbell was talking to Howard Hawks about the film Rio Bravo, and came up with the idea of Stumpy (Walter Brennan) throwing sticks of dynamite during the fight between the sheriff and his men, and Nathan Burdette and his men. This was about the extent of B.H. McCampbell’s work on the story. Hawks liked the idea, and as he often did, he gave the writer (in this case B.H. McCampbell) the credit for writing the original story. B.H. McCampbell is, by the way, Howard Hawks’ daughter – Barbara Hawks McCampbell.

The Stars in Their Courses
Author: Harry Brown
Basis for the film El Dorado [Original Novel / Story]
Publisher: Alfred A Knopf
Publication Date: 1960
Current Edition:
Publisher: Buccaneer Books
Publication Date: June 1995
ISBN-10: 1568496648
ISBN-13: 978-1568496641
Notes:
Although the book was originally published in 1960, the current edition is listed here.
Howard Hawks insisted that this book was the basis for his 1967 film, El Dorado. After reading the book, however, I have come to the conclusion that although Hawks may have read the book and garnered an interest in it as a film project, and may have even used some variations of its elements in El Dorado, the book itself bears little resemblance to the film. According to Hawks, after the original script was written he thought the story was awful, so he re-wrote it. Hawks claimed the only scene left in the film that was original to the novel was the shooting of Luke MacDonald by Cole Thornton. Hawks also claimed that the author of the novel, Harry Brown, was so angry at the resulting film based on his book, that he insisted that his name be removed from the credits.

Notes Regarding Rio Grande, Fort Apache, and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon:
John Ford’s “Cavalry Trilogy” (as it has become known), consists of three films: Fort Apache (1948), She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950). Many of the characters in these three films are similar (such as John Wayne’s character Kirby Yorke, who appears in both Fort Apache and Rio Grande, Ross Pennell, Flint Cohill, Maj. Allshard, Owen Thursday, and so on), and for good reason – the three films are based on five different stories all written by James Warner Bellah, and which are part of a larger “series” of stories commonly known as the “Fort Starke” stories.
The film She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is based on the Bellah stories “Big Hunt” (first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post of December 6, 1947), “Command” (first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post of June 8, 1946) and “War Party” (first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post of June 19, 1948). The film Fort Apache is based on the Bellah stories “Massacre” (first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post February 22, 1947), and “War Party” (Saturday Evening Post of June 19, 1948). And, the film Rio Grande is based on the Bellah story “Mission With No Record.” All of these stories appear together in “Massacre” (Lion Books, Inc. 1950), a collection of short stories by James Warner Bellah.
In all, there are 13 “Fort Starke” stories, and when taken together paint a clearer and more well-rounded picture of Fort Starke and its inhabitants – a picture that in turn enables the reader to understand the films better. Of course there are some differences between the stories and the films, as such is the nature of adapting stories to screenplays. That being said, however, there are enough similarities and recognizable characters as to tie the three films together and fill in much of the back story that is missing from the films.
The “Fort Starke” stories can be found in “Reveille” (published by Fawcett Gold Medal in 1962) and “Massacre” (published by Lion 1950). They are:
Command [The Saturday Evening Post June 8, 1946] (Basis for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon)
By the Beard of Saint Crispin [The Saturday Evening Post Aug. 3, 1946]
West of the Paradise [The Saturday Evening Post Sept. 7, 1946]
Massacre [The Saturday Evening Post Feb. 22, 1947] (basis for Fort Apache)
Spanish Man’s Grave [The Saturday Evening Post May 3, 1947]
The Devil at Crazy Man [The Saturday Evening Post June 21, 1947]
Mission with No Record [The Saturday Evening Post Sept. 27, 1947] (Basis for Rio Grande)
Lash of Fear [The Saturday Evening Post Nov. 8, 1947]
Big Hunt [The Saturday Evening Post Dec. 6, 1947] (Basis for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon)
The Last Fight [The Saturday Evening Post Oct. 16, 1948]
Stage for Elkhorn [The Saturday Evening Post Nov. 20, 1948]
Collected only in “Massacre”:
War Party [The Saturday Evening Post June 19, 1948] (Basis for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon & Fort Apache)
Flint Cohill also appears in “Ordeal at Blood River,” Bellah’s final serial for The Saturday Evening Post published Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Oct. 31, Nov. 7, & Nov. 14, 1959 and published in paperback by Ballantine in 1959.
